A scientist filled the post of Communication and Information Minister previously held by a consultant with a strong political flavor. The scientist — currently rector of Surabaya Institute of Technology (ITS) Mohammad Nuh- got the cabinet job as the aftermath of latest reshuffle.
Born in Gununganyar Surabaya, June 17th 1959, Nuh graduated from ITS electronic engineering in 1983. He started his career as lecturer in 1984 before completed postgraduate and doctoral in biomedics from Universite Science et Technique du Languedoc, Monpellier, France. Nuh was Director for Politeknik Elektronika Negeri Surabaya (PENS) ITS during 1997-2003 before appointed rector.
As scientist, Nuh had conducted several research and had published three books. One of his recent research is “Hyperthermia apparatus development for superficial cancer therapy based on adaptive neuro fuzzy controlled therapy protocol.” Nuh also involved in Control Systems Service Center (CSSC), an institution under ITS that serves industry needs for system otomation and optimalization as well as best practices implementations.

p class=”MsoNormal”>Scientist vs consultant Mohammad Nuh replaces Sofyan Djalil as Minister of Information and Communication, Djalil leaves for a new post as Minister for State Enterprises. While Nuh’s CV is packed with scientific achievements, Djalil’s has more flavor as a consultant (and politician as well).
Djalil runs a consultant firm, Sofyan Djalil and Partners that served major companies in good corporate governance. Some of its clients was PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) Tbk and PT Jamsostek. His name also appeared as commissioner, head, member, executive director and other title in many state-owned enterprise.
On top of that, Djalil had diplomatic experience during the series of negotiation between Indonesian government and Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in Helsinki, Finland.
Will a scientist do a much better job than a consultant-politician in developing national ICT? The scientist-consultant/politican combination had been disastrous for national ICT policy. Rivalry between Djalil and another ’scientist’ –State Minister of Research and Technology Kusmayanto Kadiman- in national open source policy is one of the obvious example.
Perhaps it would create a better chemistry if scientist meets scientist. Well, lets see…
