What it’s gonna be: Oracle or BMW ?

Now Oracle had all the tools SMB needs to be ahead of the competition. The database giant plans to package its enterprise resources planning (ERP) with business intelligence (BI) at a price less than a BMW.

Globally, last month Oracle had released its business intelligence application designed specially for SMB: the Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition One (BISE1). Local-wise, Oracle Indonesia will bundle BISE-1 with Oracle E-Business Suite Standard Edition (EBSSE) for new implementations.

What does it means?

This bundling strategy will give Oracle a boost in the ‘ERP for SMB race’ against competitors such as SAP and Microsoft Business Solutions (Now Microsoft Dynamics) Oracle can also ‘lock’ its customers from business intelligence players like SAS Institute, Cognos, Business Objects and Hyperion, all are eyeing SMBs. The first two brands have strong presence in Indonesia.

Just to give a background, ERP for SMB market in Indonesia experienced strong growth for the past three years. SAP began the momentum with mySAP All-in-One for mid-market and mySAP Business One for SMB. Oracle followed with E-Business Suite Special Edition (EBSSE), while Microsoft count on its Microsoft Business Solutions -a blend from four different brands: Axapta, Great Plains, Solomon and Navision.

How big is Indonesia SMB market?

The size of SMB from IT vendors’ perspective is different from the government. Companies with turnover above Rp1 billion (US$110.000) a year are categorized SMB. One former Microsoft Indonesia executive stated, according to their survey, there are more than 500.000 of such SMBs. Back to the competition.

With the announcement of Oracle BISE-1, the database giant is now the only vendor that can provide complete software solution for SMB: from managing data, running business processes, to analytics and decision making tools. And all for a price less than a new BMW.

Oracle Database 10g Standard Edition One is priced US$149 per user while Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition One is priced US$1,000 per user. Both for a minimum of five users and maximum 50 users for BISE-1. As for Oracle E-Business Suite Special Edition, for the range from US$25.000 to US$35.000, including deployment, training, and technical support for the first year -ready to go live between 10 and 40 days.

Oracle Indonesia said it will bundle the three products as a single offering for SMB, mainly to target new customers. SMBs that just start or plan to use IT to boost their business will find this offering a more favorable option. Why opt for multi-vendors if there is one that can fulfill all your need?

Complexity is the last thing SMBs need. And if the cost of keeping complexities away is to wait just a few months before buying that new BMW, I think it’s the best deal for company owners.
