Hitachi’s diskless archiving platform work with third party storage

HDS logoHitachi Data Systems (HDS) makes their digital archive solution works with almost every other storage appliances, thus maximizing company’s investments on existing storage. This is what you get from the latest version of Hitachi Content Archive Platform (HCAP), launched in Indonesia today.

Previously, HCAP was bundled with Hitachi’s own storage appliances: the Workgroup Modular Storage (WMS) and Adaptable Modular Storage (AMS) lines of product. So you have to connect nodes in the storage area network (SAN) with HCAP before data is archived.

In HCAP version 2.0 launched today, Hitachi provides the HCAP-DL (diskless) version that works not only with WMS or AMS, but also supports Universal Storage Platform (USP) V (formerly known as TagmaStore) and Network Controller. This means you can use any storage appliances that you own today, as long as you put the USP V between HCAP-DL and the existing storage.

HCAP USP will virtualize your existing storage in the virtual pool that connects with the archiving systems. This is an excellent move from Hitachi, the diskless configuration made HCAP more appealing to customers. HCAP-DL also made archiving an integral part of storage, creating an ‘archiving tier’ within the storage infrastructure.

This solution adopts standard-based interface such as NFS, CIFS, Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) and HTTP, as well as storage management standards such as Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S). Other HCAP’s new feature is in security. Hitachi introduced the patent-pending encryption also known as “Secret Sharing.” The technology stores security key within the HCAP and share that key across multiple nodes within the archive. In doing so, only a fully operational system-with all of its nodes connected to the archive-will be able to decrypt the content, meta data and search index. This will ensures that if a server or storage device is stolen or removed from the cluster, the device would be automatically encrypted and immediately unreadable by any other device.
