From modest beginnings as a one-plane airline that first flew in 2000, Lion Air has navigated its way through the turbulence in the wake of the financial crisis that blew through the region in 1997 to emerge as Indonesia’s leading budget airline carrier.

Currently, Lion Air has been operating almost 37 planes flying to not only all of Indonesia’s major cities and wondrous tourist destinations, but to Singapore, Penang and Kuala Lumpur as well (www.lionair.co.id

In this year (2008), Lion Air will be acquired  49 percent stake in an unnamed Australian airline to mark expansion of its regional flight services and it will be renamed “Lion Australia”.

President of PT Lion Mentari Airlines (Lion Air), Rusdi Kirana, said that the company will be buying 122 units of Boeing 737-900ER aircraft. Lion Air also plans to acquired a Thai Airline and to be named Lion Thailand (http://asia.news.yahoo.com
