Hatta’s economic system suitable for current condition
Joseph E. Stiglitz as an economic nobel winner said that the economic system currently is not siding with the poor, and an alternative economic system would be needed. The current economic condition is an egoistic and individualistic, which makes it difficult to build unity in diversity.
Related by current economic condition, writer of “Bung Hatta dan Ekonomi Islam: Pergulatan Menangkap Makna Keadilan dan Kesejahteraan”, Anwar Abbas also said that economic system who introduced by Muhammad Hatta is still relevant and suitable for application to the current conditions, and may even provide ways and means to improve the life of the ordinary people in our country.
Hatta’s economic thoughts and ideas could be substantially be valued parallel with Islamic counselling, especially from the philosophical aspect, and the aims of its basic and instrumental values. Therefore Hatta’s economic thoughts could be viewed as part of Islamic economic thinking (www.antara.co.id).
Anwar said that Hatta wished to make and build an economic system himself which suited the character and culture of his people. This system is the Indonesian socialist economic system built from western socialist culture and the Islam religion.
As we know that, Hatta built Islam as an economic source focusing more on substance, rather than on Islamic symbols, so that other religious followers did not reject and accepted it.
Mohammad Hatta was born in Bukit Tinggi, West Sumatra. He was Indonesia’s first vice president, later also serving as the country’s Prime Minister. Known as “The Proclamator“, he and a number of Indonesians, including the first president of Indonesia, Sukarno, fought for the independence of Indonesia from the Deutch.
Anwar Abbas also as an economic lecturer at the Islamic Faculty of the Syarif Hidayatullah Syariah University and also the secretary of Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI).
